Grip configuration issues

I just install SUSE Linux pro 9.2 three days ago and I'm learning and reading the thick @55 book that came with it. I've been searching the internet and this site on my girlfriends xp computer, just got the internet working on my Linux computer(not as dumb as I look) but to the problem: Using GRIP to convert wav. to .mp3- I think I messed up my encoder files. I have downloaded bladeenc and lame mp3 encoders, I extract the files in a seperate folder, then I take the original file drag it in shell, hit enter and then copy the "blah blah" in the encoder executable line in GRIP, then i press rip and encode button, the file shows up as wave file then disappears after the status window says it finished and cd comes out. I dont understand all the % %% %% switches either. I need some detailed instructions on how to setup the encoder and downloaded program(bladeenc..lame) please thanks for the help or just direct me to some noob directions on how to do this didn't find it in search or how-tos.

Start grip. Click on the Help tab. Then click on 'Configuring grip' for configuration instructions. Scroll down to the bottom for explanation of the % switches.

this is what I have in my encoder config

encoder:lame
encoder executable:/usr/bin/lame
encoder command-line:--alt-preset standard %w %
encode file extension:mp3
encode file format:/mp3/%A/%d/%n.mp3
