Graphics Drive/3d Help~
 

Hello, I am new at Linux and need to update my old computers Graphic Card so I can run some 3d games, etc.

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)


That is my graphic drive...I think O_O
Could someone please direct me as to how I can update this? I tried running a 3d program in VMWare and Virtual Box under windows and it wouldn't work, so yeah...Tried downloading nVidia drivers from Software Center but I don't know if those work either.

Yes, that's your graphics card. It's an integrated card made by Intel. No, nVidia drivers couldn't possibly work with it. You update its drivers by updating your kernel and your xserver-xorg-video-intel package.

You're not going to get good 3D (if any) in a virtual machine. Does VMWare even support it? I know VirtualBox only recently released beta 3D support for VMs.

You can get better performance by buying a new card (nVidia or ATI are your only real choices) and installing the drivers for it.

How exactly would I update the intel package/kernel? And yeah, the program works fine on my Mac's VMware w/ wXP~
Just need the graphic card updated since it doesn't seem to...work with w/e I have now(Havn't touched this computer in about a year)

You didn't mention what distro you're running. Software Center? Is that Ubuntu? If so, apply all available updates. What version Ubuntu? You might want to upgrade to the latest release. Search the web for how.

Whichever is the newest updates, I updated the whole thing last night. Full of glitches now but...

I guess there might not be good 3d acceleration inside VMs e.g. VMWare or Virtual Box. You may have to run the OS on a real machine.

agreed, any cheap ATI or nVidia card is going to be so much better than Intel.you will notice video and pictures will look better as well.
