Graphical environment doesn't load anymore

linux just goes to the console upon startup. i've typed init 5 and nothing happens. then when i reboot and select failsafe it will go to the same console but different user, starts with an s, i forgot. then from there i type exit and then init 5 and it loads normally into kde. what the hell is going on, i didn't do anything and already it's doing crazy things.

i've looked at the inittab file and the default is to load init 5 soooo there's nothing wrong with that.

4 -- not 5.... /etc/inittab

i've only seen FC3 using runlevel 5 as yet, and nobody ansewered my question as to why...

you can start X from console by using the command 'startx'

switching to 4 made it worse. 4 is unused, 5 is X11 (i think i got that right). even in failsafe mode i couldn't get into the gui. i guess i'll reinstall and if that doesn't work then i guess i'm going back to XP

Is there anything in the logs (/var/log/messages file, readable for root)? Entries have timestamp, so you should be able to find the right period of time. All error messages (I guess there should be something) are shown in that file. Find them and post here.
