graphic card driver

I have a workstation that comes with a low-end 2D graphic card, I want to replace it with nVidia Quadro FX 500. I am wondering can I just replace it, and then when I first install Linux OS, I will just choose "nvidia Quadro FX (generic)" from the list of video card configuration? and update the driver later? Has anyone tried it before?

Thanks

Hard to answer not knowing your distro ... my
personal preference(s) wouldn't offer that driver
in the first place, but chances are that if you
chose it on install without it being in the machine
would cause the box to not start X for you.

Cheers,
Tink

thanks for sharing your experience.
I will run Redhat Enterprise Linux WS 3.0 and it does have "nVidia Quadro FX (generic)", but not specific for nVidia FX 500.
I'll post the result after I tried this option.
