Grafic problems

I just loaded linux madrake 8 into my older pc. It install fine ( just takes awhile ) and everything, I log in with the terminal, i type start x and then my monitor shuts off and won't come back on. Do you think it has something to do with my video card and such?

during the install process did you have opportunity to setup X and test settings?

it maybe a sync range issue

or it could be that Mandrake 8 doesn't have support for that particular card.

if it's the last one then you'll need more help than i can give you.

Try running xf86config from the command line, if you haven't already. Also (as salparadise said) make sure your sync rates are correct for your monitor (if you can't find your monitor's owner's manual, try searching google for the make/model number).

Another thing to check is the log file for XFree, usually in:

/var/log/XFree86.0.log
/var/log/XFree86.9.log

Look at the last lines of those to see if it tells you anything useful.
