gparted crash on refresh/won't open if usb is mounted

I am trying to name a usb drive but gparted won't start from ubuntu 10.04.4 32bit System menu when the usb is mounted. An open terminal displayed 15 backtrace calls on stack even though I didn't use terminal for any of the process. Starting gparted then inserting the usb doesn't cause a problem but, refreshing gparted after the usb mounts causes gparted to vaporize....close with no pop up error. Gparted works as expected without the usb on the system; I can see both hard drives. Other fat32 usb sticks don't cause trouble.
fdisk -l = /dev/sdc1 2 1498 3785472 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)

Then perhaps it's the USB stick causing the problem.

Closed no solution

The drive in question reads, writes, mounts and umounts in like all the others. Any idea why it would crash gparted?
