gparted advice please
 

I have two laptops

1 An old samsung dual booting wind 7 and linux maya 18.1
This laptop does not boot from USB only CD and is really cranky

2 New Lenovo ThinkPad which is lovely bot not happy with USB as I found to my cost - this runs linux only as above

I have installed win7 and Linux on both laptops from DvD no problems and used clonezilla

I have downloaded gparted iso current version twice and burned to dvd with Brasero but it will not boot on either machine. :cry:

What to do now?
Is there an alternative to gparted live iso?

Do you still have your Linux Mint Maya 18.1 DVD from when you installed on your old Samsung? The Linux Mint Live DVD has Gparted on it. ;)

In Mint:

Menu > Administration > GParted.

The SystemRescue distro is very useful to have and that might boot. It contains gparted, of course.

I have gparted installed and I have linux 18.1 dvd I was'nt sure if I could access gparted that way
Never heard of this but I will follow it up SystemRescue distro I mostly use clonezilla and images

Nonetheless I search the net and found the last free version of pmagic 8 on a well known software site not a torrent and the new linux did boot into that but I did not try it.

Many thanks I will post when I have tried your suggestions - the Internet search shows that this is a recurrent problem with gparted and some systems.

I don't know what "pmagic 8" is...do you mean Parted Magic? There's no such thing as Parted Magic 8, Parted Magic's versioning uses dates, the latest is 2017-01-08. Parted Magic switched from free to paid in 2013. You can still download that 2013 version for free, but anything more recent than that needs to be paid for through their site. Don't try to pirate it, it's both unethical and risky.

Habitual,

After a new installation of Linux Mint and its accompanying software updates, I regularly install additional packages such as ttf-mscorefonts-installer, numlockx, gedit, build-essential, vim and htop.

As far as I can recollect, gparted has always been installed without me having to add it.

The list of packages (attached) for Linux Mint 18.1 appears to confirm this.

On a fresh week old install of 17.1 Xfce, there is no gparted.

Software mentioned and recomended was called pmagic the version I got was free therefore I assume it may be the free version 13 you mentioned it was not a torrent - a nd from a software site with teck advice I have used for years with Windows pc and at Uni. I ran linux distro found parted and have modified one laptop with no issues.

In the alternative, you can try Plop Boot. I burned it on a CD and tried it on old machines that can’t boot from USB before. It didn't work on a Pentium 4 but worked on an Athlon. USB drive is just faster and more convenient.

This is probably the old Partition Magic DOS/Windows software. If memory serves, v.8 was the last release before it was bought and perhaps rebranded or discontinued (by Symantec, I think). In the Windows world, it became less of a star utility once Windows Vista introduced the Disk Management applet. .. but I digress.

One other suggestion came to mind ... you say you burned a DVD of the live GParted ... I have always used CDs in order to ensure boot works on all, especially old, machines. The suggestion above for Plop is also something I've often used for booting USB on machines where the BIOS doesn't support it - have been successful on hardware as ancient as a Pentium II from 1998.

as you suggested I used the installation disc found gparted and managed to enlarge my partition with no issues so that is the way to go infuture mny thanks all:D
