got video working on 9500 w/ ATI

I have a 9500 with YDL 2.3, 320 MB RAM, and an Apple ATI 4MB video card that turns out to be the equivalent of an Xclaim GA. In researching the 88800 chipset on the board, both at the ATI web site and at xfree.org , it seems not to be supported. It isn't even listed on xfree.org! This is an Apple card that they OEM'd from ATI and hot-rodded to make it work with the 9500.

Moral: don't try the ati or the atimisc drivers when configuring XF86Config-4 for the old ATI cards; they don't work and probably never will.

I am using the fbdev driver. It isn't the best but I get very usable performance. First, I used /usr/lib/yi/dexter.py to do the simple setup: 1024x768 @16 bits, and I specified my monitor. I did this several times before, and it never worked, and failsafe never worked. The difference this time is that I chose not to accelerate it; fbdev is an unaccelerated driver.

For good measure, I then used pico to get into /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. I commented out any mode line that wasn't 1024x768 at 75 hz to prevent the config file from using a mode that didn't fit.

I typed in startx and launched a 1024x768 for the first time. It is very nice.
