Got my modem working now I can't connect
 

Hi I recently post a thread here because I could get linux to recognize my modem. Well I think I figured that part out but it's still not connecting to the Internet yet. When I open up on of the dialers (i've tried pon, kppp, and wvdial) the modem dials out and I can here the handshake and then everything looks like it is connected. Then I open up mozilla and type in a web page address and after about 5 minutes of doing nothing it says can't resolve host. So I entered my ISP's DNS addresses figure that was the problem but it still don't work. Someone on yahoo told me to try and ping an IP address so I typed in "ping 216.155.194.122" but got a 100% packet loss. I told the person what happened and all they said was "Well looks like it's not actually connecting to anything" and that's it he wouldn't help me anymore. Please I am desperate now I have been trying to get linux going on the machine for about a week now but can't get past the problem with connecting to the Internet. Please if anyone can help me I would appreciate it more than you can imagine. I am getting close to giving up.

P.S. It is Debian 3.0 and a internal hardware PCI modem.

Have you supplied the correct login/password details ?

Is there a firewall running ?

yeah I know I have given the correct username and password cuase it does connect. When I try to connect with wvdial it says something like (i don't remember exactly, i'm on winxp right now) looks like welcome message and says connected and gives a time. I don't think I have any kinda firewall going becuase I didn't load one up or start one purposely but again I am very new to linux so I don't know if there is one by default or not.

No one has any idea?

I actually had that problem about a year ago. Unfortunately, I can not remember for sure what I did to solve the problem. I have a dial-up connection with an external modem hooked to a serial port. I would hear modem noises which eventually stopped. It then remain connected to my Internet provider but, I could not view any web pages.

I do remember copying down all the Internet settings that I could find anywhere on either computer under both Linux and Windows. One thing that surprised me was that my Internet provider used two different variations of my username. In one place they asked for my plain username. In another place what they really wanted was my username followed by @ and the domain name.

I also checked what settting Windows was using for the DNS server. I am not shure which change did the job but somehow I finally ended up getting web pages. I do not think tht my Linux iptables firewall was the problem. At one point I actually called a tech support person at my internet provider and asked if I was using all the correct settings. He did not know anything about Linux but I did describe to him all the settings that I had chosen. Even though he did not know Linux he knew what all the settings I was describing were for. So anyway I somehow got my Internet connection working.

Does Debian require that you be able to create your own log-in script? I once tired installing Slackware and it wanted me to create an entire log-in script. I did not bother trying to figure out how to do that. Maybe someday I will tackle Slackware. Most distros do not ask you to do that. I use Red Hat 9 and used the neat command to configure my modem and Internet connection. On my other computer I used kppp instead. There are several alternative tools.

Have you set up any proxy servers that your ISP may need? One ISP I had required me to enter proxy details for me to do anything.

Just signed up for this thread...(i.e. I had to become a member...this is what I need...info).

OK, I am experiencing the problem of not connecting via my dialup. I set up the modem...I connect to the service, I utilize an @provider.com type string with my login...I called the company...and now I think I am hot on the trail...I cannot connect to a web page or ping a site or anything like that....much like the above descibed problems.

I was able to connect and browse until I went to work and used the network card! Now, I can't connect at home with my modem.

Is there a file to modify? I use DHCP at work and at home I use a soft modem that I have received drivers for...I know an IT person that told me he struggled with getting the "standard installed" firewall to open (port 80?) for the modem to serve the world...on RedHat 9.0. I"m running Fedora 1.0. I read on an earlier forum that I may need to modify my etc/resolv.conf file and add something like:

search(isp.com)(no www)

I have turned off ip filters and packet firewalls in an effort to open a connection, but I still want some security. Any help is greatly appreciated and if you need any details...let me know...

I was having a similiar problem. Found the solution in threadid=138243 post #9 and am now on line with it!

Grr i think and am not 100% sure yet (still learning!! ) but somehow when you configure the network card first using netconfig linux thinks that you mean to use the network card to connect to the internet and not the modem.

My solution was to pull the network card out (I needed to reinstall anyways) then i installed the os. Once up and running i used kppp and bingo i was on the net , didnt even have to put the nameserver address in! .

What i did do was configure a loopback device using netconfig , I think that the problem may lie in the routing or something to that effect , havent been able to figure it out yet, im not to good with networking. But the main thing is that i can connect to the internet , the rest of the internal network will have to wait a while.

I did notice that in the kppp folder i now have kpppoe files instead of just pppd files (mm cant remember to much now , will check tonight when i get home and post some more.)

Yeah I can't take my network card out cause it's built into the motherboard. I would I get around that?

I will post the content of my ppp directory, you can compare and maybe sort things out.

The directory listing is as follows:

chap-secrets
firewall-masq
firewall-standalone
options
pap-secrets
/plugins
pppoe-server-options
pppoe.conf
resolv.conf

those are all the files that i have in that directory.
I remember last time when i used pppdsetup to configure the modem , there were different files in this directory and the modem would dialin and after 30 seconds or so it would disconnect.
After i reinstalled i didnt use the setup program , i just went into kppp and setup all my details and my modem connected fine and im able to brows the net.

If you have different files try removing them to another directory and then reconfiguring using kppp and see what appears in this directory.

i know this isnt much help , but im no guru yet so its a start at least.

My motherboard also has a ethernet built-in and i think this messing me up trying to connect to the internet. How do I disable it or get Mandrake to look to the modem to connect to the internet?
