got any advice for a new Redhat user?

hey everyone!
I have recently begun to experiment with Linux. Since I was 8 or so back in the late 80's I have been playing with computers cause my pops is a networking geek so I have a fairly good knowledge of computers. My foundation was based on terminals, BBS's, msdos, win3.1, and atari video games. Anyways, I just installed Red Hat 7.3 successfully on a PIII and have been spending the past few days trying to learn the KDE desktop environment and to familiarize myself with all of those confusing Unix commands. I have been looking at various websites trying to figure out the how-to's and it has got me this far but my learning process doesn't seem to have and sequential order to it. I figured out how to configure my network card to my microsoft network but I can't figure out how to get my soundcard to work. Does anyone have advice on how someone like myself would learn how to use RedHat7.3 from the ground up? I know this is a vague question....but how did you learn linux? Thanks

From my own experience (I've been a linux user for quite a while) by fiddling with it, and of course books, books, and books.

This may sound goofy, nut one thing that has helped me alot was not using the KDE or Gnome desktops, and using blackbox and fluxbox. The reason is that I lost easy access (even though there were still there) to the handy gui programs that comes with redhat, and had to configure stuff by hand.

The thing that has really helped me was building the Linux from Scratch distro. Really forces you to learn what's going on rather than just pushing buttons. Sounds like you could handle it.

I'm still the annoying newbie, but those two things taught me alot. If your dead set on running Redhat, they have a bunch of texts just for that disto. I use the RedHat 7.1 Bible by Christopher Negus.

Hi,

I'm using RedHat 7.2. I use gui base login. But I'm trying to change the default background of login. I already change it from the kde control panel but a default blue color redhat screen coming. How can I change this background?

i suggest having it as your only os on you home computer. use it to surf the web - check your email and whatever else your computer does for you.

use it as much as possible. using gnome or kde are ok - just don't ignore blackbox/fluxbox/openbox and others...

I would suggest taking the on-line linux 101 class it really helped me alot with command lines© It's free and i think it's a good class© I used a windows machine to read the lessons while i practiced the commandson the lunix box
