hi.

I have never Installed Linux OS and i got other OS Installed as well.
and now i'm thinking about to Install Linux on a machine that has XP Installed already.

My Question Is, How i could do that without to lose the Master Boot. ?

So you want to load Linux with WIndows bootloader on XP.

Try searching for Win2K solutions for this (theirs plently about).

Linux bootloaders are quite capable of Botting windows, as well as Linux. and definatley look better than the windows version :)

hi, I'm just running winXP and Red Hat linux on 2 different HDDs since yesterday :)
I'm using the grub bootloader which is installes on my XP harddrive. during linux installation (I first installes winXP, then Linux) you can choose which OS is automatically bootet and where to install grub. I think it's very comfortable and easy to use :) and grub doesn't kill windows :)

Its typically the case that you can dual boot XP and a Linux distribution without any problems using a Linux bootloader such as GRUB or LILO - its just a case of setting it up right - if your current XP installation takes up the whole hard drive then you''ll have to resize the relevant partition(s) to leave some unpartitioned free space for your Linux distribution - Then you'd typically just boot from the 1st Linux cd (if using a major distro) and install in the free space - you'd also typically put either LILO or GRUB in the MBR - with some of the major distros such as Mandrake there is alwaya a rescue option which variously enables you to re-installl LILO or your previous Windows bootloader - so there are aome safety nets if you do decide to use a Linux bootloader then change your mind.

I had problems when i resized my XP directory to install Red Hat. I lost windows data in the partition and I never worked out why. Does anyone have any idea?

If you Installed Linux on the same partition, surely u will lose Windows data because Linux work on other File System and windows doesn't support it at all.
If you have Installed Linux on other partition and you lost the data in windows. may be u lost the Boot Sector of Windows.

I suppose it depends on what tools pnh73 used to do the resizing of the partition. I have a copy of partition magic 8.0, though I don't need it, because I already have mandrake 9.1 which will resize NTFS partitions for you.

I have used the PM 8 though, but that was to repartition ready for when my dvd copy of debian woody arrives.
