Good books for newbies???

Hi all,

I made the same type of thread ages ago but I can't remember the aswers and I cannot find the thread anymore, therefore, I'm asking again:

What would be a good book for newbies to learn Linux, how it works, the structure, commands and stuff?

I could kinda learn with the Internet, forums and stuff, but I like to read when I'm in the train, so I might as well learn something.

Oh, and could I find these books on amazon.com for example coz I live in a french speaking country and I can't find any book in English there, so I'm gonna have to order it on the net...

Thx a lot.

get small book such as 'sams' series or from oreily..
get a book less than 200 pages..

then u can go 'learning bash' from oriely

beyond that, google, linuxquestions will be sufficient..

The Linux RUTE is an excellent manual, and it is free unless you want the printed manual. You can either download it and read it on your local system, read it online at one of the mirrors, or purchase the book.

Searching with you only having a little over 100 posts, it was fairly easy finding your original thread that was similiar to this one with the search button right below each post you make.

just had a look at amazon.com and there's one called Linux In a Nutshell 3rd Edition, is it the same one that's been updated or is it the 3 part of it?

No, its not part of a 3 part series. Its just the 3rd book they have put out, its like an update most likely so they keep using the same name for the book, just a newer edition.

what about "learning the bash shell", is that any good?

DaDdY SnEb 10-30-2002 10:43 AM

hehe, there was a discount of 30% on each book (linux in a nutshell and running linux both 3rd edition) so I just ordered them, thanks everyone!

I bought the Red Hat Linux 7.2 Bible and it comes with the distro. It's about 1000 pages but I got the OS up an running by reading only the first 100 pages or so. You should be able to order it online at Amazon for about $39.00 US.
