gnucash install = major pain

I am wanting to try out gnucash, so that I can further lower my need for windoze (Quicken).
I downloaded the i386.rpm file fine. I knew that it had a lot of dependencies, so I checked in software manager for dependencies and I installed guppi, g-wrap, libguile9-devel, etc etc from my mandrake 8.1 CDs.
Then when I clicked on the rpm file to install, I just got error msgs regarding lots of files needed, such as libgal.so.18, libgtkhtml.so.20 and a bunch of others.

On the gnucash.org website, they basically say something like... "Our program is so difficult to install, that we recommend that you just wait until it comes included with your favorite distribution..."

continuation of above

I wonder how come I can't enter a longer message, all I get is a little box to enter new threads, so I have to continue by way of a reply.

Anyway, what else do I need to do to install gnucash, or did I do something wrong?

Anyone using gnucash?

Thanks

well, I just installed from the mandrake CDs, gnucash version 1.6.2 (I think). I would prefer to use the newer download version 1.6.5, but... no help or advice....

There's not many responses when someone posts a question regarding some kind of financial or productivity software on these boards.

Apparently the only thing computers are for is either as an expensive socializing tool (like email, chat, etc) or else just games...?
