Gnu Grub Question

On Linux Mint 9.0, using the StartUp-Manager I can change the Timeout and the Default operating system, but does anybody know how I can change the order the boot options (the way the operating systems are listed)?

I've just installed Mint on my wife's pc and what little she has seen she really likes it. I want Mint to be the default, which it is, but I want the XP to be the second choice.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your time.
Larry

Wouldn't be hard to change, but making them permanent (with grub2) would be difficult. And your good lady would probably be even more cranky if it changed again at some (unknown) point in future with a software update.
Have a read of this.

This looks like a project that strictly adheres to the Murphy's Law, at least if I become involved. I think I shall wait.

Thanks for the quick response, syg00.

I have no MS systems but assuming you backup your existing /etc/grub.d files and know how to use a live cd to rescue them, if borking occurs....then and only then try at own risk etc.....re-number your scripts so the os-prober script to be the first one....using root powers and then run update-grub with root powers and reboot.

if that changed the order, remember to look at your new /boot/grub/grub.cfg then edit /etc/default/grub to change the default number. Remember grub2 counts menuentry lines from zero

good luck
