Gnome3 can't get the mouse click to uncheck boxes in main menu

I just upgraded to gnome 3 & there are double entries in Activities>Applications window.
All of the solutions provided suggest deleting the files manually, instead of unchecking the boxes, most of them are from the usually hidden debian menu.
I wouldn't however be a problem doing that but the other problem is that as a user I also can't add installed items to main menu, for example the real firefox.
I also read the bug report for thisproblem which suggested that the problem was within Python v.2.7 & to downgrade it to Python v.2.6.
How can I install Python 2.6 or get the mouse-click to work?
Another thing noticed you have to log-out to get to shutdown button or issue the command to shutdown.

My solution was to install python 2.6 by following these instructions.
http://www.stylesen.org/python_27_debian_squeeze_60
I only worried about 2.6
BTW the double entries are the from the debian menu.
