GNOME/XFree86 trouble logging in with /root
Hi,
The problem is -- when I try to log in with /root user with X11, I get a frozen screen after entering user id and pw. It shows the Metacity Window Manager icon and text at the bottom and nothing happens anymore. I can move the mouse but it does not help. The strange thing is, I can log in normally with my other user. I can also log in under root in the failsafe mode and I can su root.
I know I was messing around with network settings for the root user. I even took the IRQ and memory range for the ethernet card from Windows and applied it there. At some point it stopped working and I continued changing settings trying out all kinds of things.
I need help with this. How do I go about diagnosing the problem? Which direction should I look into?
I would really hate having to reinstall X11 or GNOME, but if that is what I have to do perhaps somebody can tell me which one to try first (sigh) ...
Thanks and regards,
Janis
