GNOME terminal will not open in Ubuntu 10.10

I've been running Ubuntu 10.10 for about a month with no problems.
I've installed recommended packages as needed but nothing else.

For some reason, when I open a terminal window now, it cursur flashes for a few seconds then the window closes. I have researched the problem a little bit.

I tried installing Konsole to see if I can get an error message that's of some use.

When I open Konsole it displays: "Warning: Program '/bin/bash' crashed."

Any ideas what to make of this?

Thank you!

Hi,

Can you try Alt-Control-F1 and see whether you can login.

Cheers.

Hi okomba,

I have tried Alt-Control-F1, and then attempted to login in there. After entering a username and password, it notifies me that I can upgrade to the newer version of ubuntu and then returns a prompt for login information.

Hi,

My guess is that your system could be corrupted. I am not sure if this would help, but try these:

1. Create another user and try to login as that user
2. If 1. does work then try deleting ~/.bashrc from corrupted profile and try login again

Cheers.

Meanwhile you can open xterm and run konsole from
there, and post the error messages here (printed on xterm), in
code tags. Perhaps then someone might be able to help.

To run xterm, press Alt F2, type xterm there,
and press enter.
