Gnome splash taking ages to load

Hey, i just started using gnome as opposed to KDE and so far so good except for one problem; sometimes when gnome starts the splash screen stays there for ages. if i click on it then it goes and i can use Gnome as normal except i cannot log out. One time i left the splash running and it happened that the splash DOES eventually go on its own and i can then log out as normal. I included some pictures of what its doing when it hangs, any ideas? driving me nuts!

any ideas? I know its not much to go by, im just hoping someone else has has this problem. thanks in advance for any help!
