How do I change the GNOME splash screen?

If you are using GNOME-2.0.x:
Replace the file /usr/share/pixmaps/splash/gnome-splash.png with your new splash screen.

If you are using GNOME-2.1.x:
You can edit "/apps/gnome-session/options/splash_image" gconf key and change path to your new splash screen.
