gnome setting daemon problems!

got gentoo linux...but when i try to login as root it says this:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

The last error message was:

There was an unknown activation error.

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

Not sure what to do about it..i googled and found this...
my .xsession file:
> #!/bin/sh
> exec /usr/local/bin/gnome-session
> (apparently, xdm was unable to locate gnome-sessions. Adding the path resolved that problem.)

but im not sure what that commad does and i realyl dont wanna mess up terribly AGAIN!
