gnome problem in fedora 7

Hey I'm a Linux newbie, doing my first install. I have a nvidia geforce 6800 graphics card. I had to boot into the text mode, because in GUI mode my screen went black. I made sure I selected gnome to be installed. After the install I was sent to a CLI where I entered "gmdsetup". This wouldn't run. How can I get into a GUI from the command line?

type gdm after you login, this will bring you to a graphical login screen, post back once you get into gnome and i'll teach you how to make it come up as default

my monitor just goes black with the only thing displayed on it being "Can't Display This Video Mode". I then have to ctrl-alt-F6 to get back to the command line where I can do anything. I took a look at my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, not noticing any info on my monitor refresh rate. Also the only info on my graphics card driver is nv...is that normal?
