whats the difference and what they do!??
wich one is better!??
xwindows!?? is it the same!??

acid_kewpie 06-25-2002 08:20 AM

ugh, please SEARCH this site and the internet in general for opinions and reviews etc. there is no BETTER. x windows is the window system that all the window managers and desktop environments use, the guts of the "gui" and do you need all the exclamations????!!!!?!?!!?!

zLinuxz 06-25-2002 09:43 AM

heheh...hey freakboy...umm, just a quicky on them...Kde looks a lot more like Windows and Gnome doesn't. I prefer Gnome as you can make it look unreal cool, and Kde I guess not that much...but hey it's up to you, try both, and like all knowledgeable acid said, search the net a little for some more detailed differences, :)

tundra 06-25-2002 12:01 PM

do a search on www.google.com

ReSync 06-25-2002 12:37 PM

I prefer KDE, because I find it faster on my computer...

FreakboY 06-25-2002 02:05 PM

i see so...
kde is the choice!??

sorry for the exclamations!!!

Some like GNOME, and some like KDE. I like KDE, because I feel GNOME is not as perrty. But GNOME is generally faster on my system.

You know, not to be mean, but Linux is about choice. My advise is you play with BOTH, and decide for yourself. See how your system responds, and how you do interfaced with it.

I know you are used to being spoon fed everything by various companies, but now is your chance to play and make your own decisions. So do it!

Gnome = faster + prettier (for me)
KDE = has more durable feel, better for developing + working. I use mostly it.

BlackBox = fastest & lightest
Enlightement = makes your heart hurt, so pretty it is, so pretty...
IceVM = forget it. I hate it

Install them all, try them out.
Linux aint limited to just 1 GUI... :p

crashmeister 06-25-2002 05:30 PM

They are both crab - go with Windowmaker or some other windowmanager and use the gnome or KDE apps when you need them.

mace 06-25-2002 05:38 PM

fluxbox.

kde is too like windows. only cooler
gnome is like kde. only cooler
blackbox is like neither. only cooler
fluxbox is like blackbox. only cooler

therion12 06-25-2002 07:19 PM

I say try them all and see which you like.

I like KDE since you can make it look cool.

Sfin 06-25-2002 07:27 PM

Now you learned why you don't ask which window manager, or desktop environment is best. All you will get is what people prefer, so like many said before, try both desktop environments, and see which one YOU like.

Also try some of the other window managers, such as Windowmaker, Fluxbox, Blackbox, and so on, until you find one you like.

MikeeX 06-25-2002 08:34 PM

Thats why i love linux, you have so many choices when it comes to window managers. I always end up going back to window maker tho, its just so sweet :-)

boowax 06-26-2002 02:42 PM

ok...so its frivilous to talk about which is best, so we are supposed to try all different kinds of window managers, I've got that much. One question though: how exactly do I go about that? I installed Red Hat 7.1 last (so it did all the setting up of x windows and everything for me) week with both GNOME and KDE but it boots up to the graphical login for GNOME. I don't know how to start KDE or change the setting for startup. Help me out here.

oh and I always run as root, allow remote logins over telnet, open up all my port, and I put this command in daily: chmod 777 *

just kidding :-P

I'd say KDE is a nice environment to develop in, but i prefer gnome and my reason is because the foot reminds me of the Foot Clan in teenage mutant ninja turtles.

horsepower300 06-26-2002 03:57 PM

Gnome has the foot though!
