I think it's absolutely a server as it was installed with the capabilities of a server, but yes running a server in GUI is not recommended, since you have mentioned its for learning process that is tolerable:-)....

You have only a unsecured your server form security point of view... and your precious resources are consumed and end up in smoke with GUI...

I am not sure if I am the one you should be asking that question to. I am a beginner at it. I believe it was still server after that, I know it was still confusing. Was a bit easier navigating through desktop for some things. Still had to use the terminal screen for most stuff though. I bought a book on it to avoid having to ask question after question in here.

This is the book I bought on it. Good book.
