gnome on old laptop

hi, i've installed redhat 7.0 on my old laptop, which has a pentium 166mhz CPU and 160 mgb of RAM.

everything seems fine on the machine, except that Gnome is crawling. if i run top, i notice that even without gnome running, the system is taking up 90mgb of my RAM. with gnome, it is taking up an extra 20 mgb -- so that the total comes to 116 mgb of memory being used, with about 44mgb left for free. since it's not exhausting my physical memory, i'd guess it's not using any swap space, then why is everything so sloooooww? slow as in sometimes the mouse pointer doesn't even move smoothly.

i realize that my machine is out of date, but i'd like to use it for just emails and browsing the web and simple programming here and there. my question is -- is there anyway to strip down some parts of gnome to make it run faster?

the other thing is, i can run windows 98 on this machine without any problem -- does that mean gnome is less efficient than windows?

thanks for your help.

X itself is a hog, on a 166, its gonna run slow in my opinion no matter what.
