GNOME on KDE? Is it possible? What's going on?
 

Hello, everyone. I've got a problem that I haven't been able to find a solution to, and hope that maybe someone out there can help me with.

I am running SUSE 9.2 Pro on my Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. I am also running the KDE GUI. However, somehow, during the past 48 hours, I managed to mess something up, and now I am getting the KDE along with what looks to be like maybe a variant of GNOME, if not GNOME itself.

I can see KDE load up during a bootup or session restart. It looks great. But then something else covers it all up. The entire desktop. With no indication of what it is, where it came from, or how to stop it. After some digging, I noticed that the applet to change the wallpaper is the exact same applet called from within the GNOME Control Center. This is what leads me to think this is GNOME or some variant there of.

Does this look familiar to anyone? Can anyone tell me what config file I need to alter to get rid of it? I've looked all over, and done things short of reinstalling my OS (which I've already done twice and would prefer not to do again). I've removed all of the GNOME stuff, with no success. I really don't know what to do, and I'd like to get rid of this soon.

Hope there's someone out there who can (and is willing) to help me.

Open up a console (Konsole or similar) and type
It might have set itself somewhere in startup too but I don't use KDE so I'm not sure where you'd look for that.

You probably ran nautilus and forgot to pass the command switch telling it not to take over as the window manager,...

Which would cause exactly the effect you described.

You can run KDE programs in Gnome and vice versa, so long as the libraries are installed...

Thanks, guys! This worked precisely. Now that you mention it, I do seem to have some vague recollection of accidentally launching something called nautilus - must have clicked on one thing when I meant to select something else. This put me back to where I was, and I do very much appreciate it!
