GNOME on KDE
 

Hi,

How can I install the GNOME(Ubuntu) environment on my Kubuntu 6.10 (without removing kubuntu)... My net connection is very slow and gets disconnected often. So I cannot download 100/200Mb at one stroke. Is there a torrent to install a GNOME desktop?

Your best bet would be to install it off of a cd. Do you know anyone with a faster net connection ?

Alas no, But can does cannonical ship CDs of ubuntu 6.10? and can I install GNOME with a Ubuntu 5.10 CD? Also, If i select to install ubuntu-desktop in Adept, then Kubuntu-desktop automatically gets selected as remove...Cant I retain both the environments?

I haven't tried it, but I'm pretty sure you can. Just add the ubuntu cd as a local repository. I don't think cannonical ships free cd's anymore, but you might be able to find a free one with linux mag's. There are torrents of them I know. Downloaded the torrent myself. :)

I will surely try and let you know...but dosent 5.10 uses an older GNOME environment..will I be able to update it?

Many distros now come with BOTH Gnome and KDE.
Using the package manager is surely the best way to do this, but working from a different distro CD will be a problem. The whole idea of the package manager is to keep track of what's installed and resolve dependencies. Linking up to a different distro version may well confuse it.

Have you looked at the Gnome site to see if they have a torrent version?

Are you using Kubuntu 6.10 or 5.10?(you've said both) There's a big difference. If you're using 6.10 Edgy, it should be as easy as installing from the repositories. I initially installed Ubuntu(Gnome), and have since added the KDE interface(Kubuntu), and Xcfe Interface(Xubuntu). I like them all, but Gnome is my favorite. When you have all 3 desktop environments installed, on the sign on screen, simple click Sessions, and choose which environment you want. Your Grub menu will not need to be altered. 1 good thing about doing it this way, instead of setting up a dual boot of Kubuntu and Ubuntu, is that any program you have working under Kubuntu, will automatically be working under Ubuntu(or Xubuntu if you so choose). Its really pretty easy...

Go to Synaptic, and do a search for "Gnome-Desktop"... There should be one there called GNome Desktop Environment, or something like that. Mark it for install and it will flash up that its going to be installing quite a few other programs. Approve it, then hit Apply. I don't know how long Gnome takes to install, but KDE took me about 3min.

Hi. I think you can set up a local repository (download it), and when you are sure you have it downloaded, then install without fear that your net connection will fail at a crital time. I found this link.

Seems perfect for what you want to do. You might also want to check out wget. I think you can install with wget too, and it supports resuming of an interupted download. I am unsure of the syntax though. Maybe someone else can give an example ? I remember debian had a setting, asking if you wanted to save partial downloads of a failed install. Kubuntu might as well, but I haven't looked for it yet. If it did, you wouldn't have to worry about being interupted.
