Gnome Main Menu malfunctions
 

I've got a pesky problem with my Suse 10.2 Gnone main menu. When using the newest version of the main menu the system will randomly freeze and sometimes the newest main menu icon will disappear and I see a pinpoint black dot in its' place. When I leave the system alone for 5 to 30 minutes the system will unfreeze and the main menu will appear and begin to function again.

I assume that the system actually freezes because I have the system monitor displayed in my panel. It is set to show processor activity and there is no activity displayed. I've performed a clean install four times as a result of this issue.

Whenever I remove the newest version of the main menu from the panel and replaced it with the traditional main menu, I never experience this problem.

I searched this site and some others but have found no information regarding this issue. Being new to Linux I've really no idea how to trouble shoot it. Using the traditional main menu is one obvious solution but one I'd rather not use.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

<edit>In hindsight, I suppose that there is the possibility that only the panel is freezing and not the whole system.

What version of Gnome do you have installed and is it an upgrade to the version that comes with Suse 10.2?

SuSE doesn't work well with gnome. If you want to use gnome, you need KDE installed also. SuSE kind of flips out on just gnome. Debian Etch works really well with gnome, or KDE. KDE is better for beginners. Gnome is lighter for less powerful hardware.

Actually, I have gone back to the traditional main menu for now.

Gnome 2.16.1 is installed. It might or might not be an upgrade to the bundled SUSE 10.2 version. I'm not sure what all changes were made by YaST online updater.

Awesome Machine, I'll try installing KDE but generally "Less is More" for me. Gnome has provided everything I need to this point: printers, scanner, internet connection, and networked to an M$ XP machine.

To change your main menu icon stop going to the configuration editor. This icon is linked all over the place, so to save time just replace the icon at the source. Go to /home/<user>/.icons/<your current icon set> and look for the icon you want to replace. To be sure it doesn't give you problems down the road size it up and save as a .png out of a program like Gimp.
