gnome launcher icons - why different choices if on Desktop or Panel???
Ubuntu 9.10 new install - nothing fancy
I created a launcher on the Desktop to a location containing some files of interest. Works fine. So I open properties on the launcher and find a nice folder looking icon in /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places. Select it and I am good to go.
So now I drag the launcher to the panel and it makes a copy on the panel with the spring icon. I open properties and again navigate to /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places. There are NO icons shown! If I do ls /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places I see many icon files including my desired folder.svg
ls -l shows:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15653 2009-09-22 01:43 /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places/folder.svg
So the file actually lives in the subdirectory - it is not a link as are many of the others listed. So why can I not choose it for a Panel launcher when I can select it for a Desktop launcher?
It seems that Panel launchers can only accept icons from /usr/share/icons/hicolor/scalable/apps
Am I missing something? It should not be this hard.
Thanks,
Ken

You could just copy that icon somewhere else like in your /home and retry.

Yeah, known problem. Just enter /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/places/folder.svg in prompt instead of navigating. It works.

Thanks z-vet. I tried that and it did not work. Actually the whole launcher was hosed when I dragged it to the panel. I had to create a new one as file:///data/OpenOffice rather than simply the path to the folder as I had in the Desktop launcher.
I tried again this morning and I could in fact paste the fully qualified path/name for the desired icon and it worked.
And for today's anomaly - I have 2 monitors with separate X screens on each (nVidia). If I create a launcher on the right desktop it appears on the left one! If I create a folder it disappears. If I create a document it exists on the second desktop until I give it a name. It then disappears. I find both the folders and files in ~/Desktop but they do not display in either X screen(?)

Thanks ~sHyLoCk~ I did something similar - I copied the desired icon into the folder where the launcher builder showed icons to select from. What a pain.
