Gnome, KDE, and linux file types

I just installed Mandrake 9.1. I've never used linux before. Whenever I boot, it loads Gnome automatically and logs in automatically as well. How do I get it to load KDE instead? Right now I have to log out and then log in using KDE. Also, how do I log in as root?

What are some common Linux file types and what are they for? Thanks for your help.

as far as logging in as root, bear in mind its best to not log into root unless the task at hand requires it (i prefer to just open up a terminal and log into root there). anyways to log into root at the GUI just type in

root

for the username and whatever your root password is for the password. to log into root from a terminal do this:

$ su -

then it will prompt for the password and, if successful, you're root baby! merely type

$ exit

and your back to normal user.
i haven't used Mandrake but in RH, theres an option at the login prompt to choose which desktop manager you want to use, maybe the info you are looking for is in there somewhere. as for your filetype question im kinda confused what you mean exactly, could you reitereate it maybe?
