gnome hangs after login

After logging in at the login prompt the resolution changes to my desktop resolution (as they are independent) and my cursor changes to an arrow, but then it just hangs.

This is not a development build, I have only been using this build since about a month ago.

I've since been able to find the answers to almost all of my problems just about immediately, although now was a good time to register. I can't get my current installation to work.

I've had this problem before in the past and it was solved by simply installing a new kernel as such:

sudo aptitude install linux-386
Although it is seems to be the same problem this solution no longer works.

I love this stuff all help is appreciated!!

You will need to post the log,not sure about UBUNTU ~/.xsession-errors or in /var/log/something.I tested ubuntu and it will mess up if you install non-ubuntu.I would do a apt-get upgrade but make sure your apt.source.list is with the ubuntu sites and not debian.
