Gnome Greeter screen resolution - Ubuntu Gutsy
Happy new year everyone,
I have been using Ubuntu Edgy Eft and have decided to take a look at Gutsy Gibbon. I have installed Gutsy Gibbon and everything is working, but there are a couple of niggling things. The Gnome login greeter is a low resolution that is not the native resolution of my LCD panel so it looks really mediocre. Once I log in, the screen resolution for my Gnome desktop can be configured to match the native resolution of my LCD panel. But the gdm greeter remains at the wrong resolution at next login. I remember in Edgy Eft, all I would have to do to fix this is to edit the xorg.conf file. But then again, in Edgy Eft, if the gdm resolution was incorrect, so would my entire Gnome Desktop resolution be incorrect. Can someone point me to which file needs to be edited to set a better resolution for the GDM greeter? I tried looking in gdm.conf but couldnt see anything related in there, but that might be just my newbieness. |
Dear greengroccer,
by LCD I assume,in my ignorance, you mean a flat screen arrangement. These have a set resolution (usually 1024x ?) and cannot be changed. Once you are into the file system this maybe able to modify what you see but I'm only guessing. Itake it you have tried the controle centre to change the appearance of your descktop. Roy. |
Hi Roy, Yes LCD = Flat screen.
Yes I understand that LCD's panels are shitty and cannot cope well with resolutions outside their native resolution, hence why I would like to have the Gnome login greeter appear at a resolution more suited to that of the native resolution of my LCD panel. Yes I have changed the resolution of Gnome desktop using the "screen resolution" application from the Preferences menu, however doing this does not change the resolution that the Gnome greeter appears in (at least on Gutsy Gibbon it doesn't). Does anybody know how to configure the resolution of the Gnome greeter itself in Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon? Its a niggling thing that will probably drive me insane. |
Dear greengrocer,
shorely if the hardware has only one setting then no matter how much fiddling is done with the files. etc The hardware will not respond. Perhaps try the veas and generic settings. If that doeoes not work I suggest you get a CRT monitor. Roy. |

The LCD panel has a native resoution of 1280x1024 pixels. The Gnome greeter (login screen) appears with a resolution of what looks to be 800x600. I can see the screen, (there is nothing wrong with the LCD panel, it just does what it does).
After logging in, the Gnome Desktop appears at a resolution of 1280x1024 All I want to know is why the Gnome greeter (login screen) appears at a lower resolution than the Gnome desktop session itself, and how do I make the login screen appear at the higher resolution like the desktop session does. The hardware will be just fine if I can get the Gnome greeter (login screen) to appear at the 1280 x 1024 and not 800x600 as it does at present. Does anyone know how to configure this? |
Dear greengrocer,
it probably loads at 800x600 as that will be the default and no changes will take effect until the o/s is loaded. This is possibly a bios issue as 800x600 is generally accepted as a 'safe' resolution.I can't think why you would want to but maybe changes could be made in the bios. Roy. |
My problem too
Hello Greengrocer, i've experienced the same problem too.
However I try to solve it; by edit the xorg.conf file, change from Screen and Graphics panel, etc; the GDM Greeter always back to 800*600. Only my desktop after logon uses the right resolution; 1024*768. FYI, I use PC desktop with CRT monitor. Since you use the LCD, I'm afraid that it is a Gutsy Gibon bug. Quote:

screens resolution
Before the os kicks in you are between the bios and the bootloader and so it's no suprise that initial screen is of an unchoosen size/resolution. Have this problem with Mandriva 8 but what does it matter when the os works in the format you want- personnally prefer 800x600 as a a little shortsighted.

There is some more to it, but that will give you a general idea of what is happening. So at the point of his problem the boot loader has long past given control over to the kernel. greengrocer I have to agree it sounds like a bug, but I'm not for sure. |
start up process
Thanks for the lesson in the boot process but still don't think it is a bug or, moreover, not important. If the thing repeatedly returns to the desired settings once you are logged in then what is the problem?

Change to Kubuntu Gutsy
Hello everyone,
4 days ago I decided to download the Kubuntu iso. I just wanted to know, was the KDM had the same problem as GDM. I installed, set my resolution in System Setting and VOILAAA!!!! The resolution was displayed correctly, before and after logon. It worked both in my office PC and notebook. So in my opinion, it's the GDM Gutsy bug... not Ubuntu itself. The different resolution before and after login, maybe is not the big problem for someone. But for me, I don't like my screen always change it's resolution whenever I login and logout. I'm afraid it damages my monitor. Heheh.... :D Okay, it's time to me to play w/ Kubuntu now. |

All of the versions of Ubuntu I have used on that same computer in the past, can achieve a resolution of 1280x1024 at the Gnome login/greeter screen. THIS PROBLEM HAS ONLY SURFACED WITH GUTSY GIBBON VERSION OF UBUNTU. Quote:
I realise your trying to help Fred, but seriously your clutching at straws with your posts. Quote:

Dear Sir,
will now pluck more out of my behind. almost feels better already. Alright I might have got the boot up sequence slightly wrong but if the thing works as you want, dispite an initial problem, then I don't see the issue, that is, providing it does not interfere with the general running of. |
Fred,
The login greeter screen is the first thing you see when Ubuntu boots up. It looks like crap at such low res. Heck even Windoze can achieve a better result on its login/welcome screen. The point is, the login/greeter screen in earlier versions of Ubuntu worked correctly (including correct resolution), right back to version 5.10? Breezy Badger. Surely this has been tested and there is a fix? I cant beleive that if it is a bug, how the heck did it get past testing? you know I won't get over it, its the little things that are often most annoying. Quote:
Heck Ubuntu project might aswell shut up shop then. Edgy Eft working fine, nothing to see here, no room for improvement because it does some stuff just fine. Move along kids. Sheeesh! |
