gnome desktop won't be selected!

Hi!
I have just installed FC6 with gnome. the whole installation worked fine, until I restarted the whole stuff. since then when I logged in, I don't get gnome but one of those simple desktop environment. I've wrote in /etc/sysconfig/desktop
Quote:
DESKTOP="GNOME"
, have restarted the computer a few time (selecting also "default session" before logging) but I do not get gnome!
I had a look in log/messages but didn't find anything related to gnome.
Does anyone have an idea?

try going to the CLI and typing "gdm" I know that's the command I use to run gnome if it isn't running.
