GNOME desktop messes up

I have noticed on a few of my machines that whenever a user logs in, i get a black screen and all the icons become as small as a dot and also, i get very small message boxes without any messages but with a tick sign on the command button. but on KDE this does not happen. It just happens out of the blue. does someone know why this happens?

Does it happen when you run startx from the command line? If KDE works ok and GNOME doesn't then my guess is that it's a font issue. I had something like this happen on enlightenment once b/c the default theme didn't have the proper font. It sounds like the X server is configured ok since KDE works, but if you're having this problem on multiple machines then it sounds more like a your distro isn't giving you all the gnome packages.
