Gnome crashes when loading Metacity
 

ive had this problem for a while now. whenever i try to boot into gnome, the splash screen freezes when trying to load metacity.

you see, my home folder is mounted in a seperate HD. when i install/re-install linux gnome seems to ork but the moment i mount my home folder for my main HD i can no longer log into gnome. i am assuming one of the hiden configuration files in my home folder are corrupt but i have no idea which one.

this problem started when i switched from FC4 to Mandriva2006. i had mounted my main HD back then as home too but the OS was unstable on my comp and i had to re-install FC4. however when i was back to FC4 i was no longer able to log into gnome so i assume Mandriva damaged something in my home folder.

any help in fixing this would be appreciated.

i'm having the same problem, however, my /home is on the same drive as everything else... it happened after my battery died and went thru what i'm assuming was an improper shutdown, tho, everything seemed to shut down individually as normal, not all at once just blacked out. any ideas at all would be greatly appreciated. i'm running blackbox right now, but the wife is -killing- me with it. she can barely even operate gnome. i'm going nuts.

the problem is there some of the scripts and start-up files are loceted hidden in the home folder are corrupt. i solved my problem by mounting the home partition somewhere else, logging into gnome and then deleting most of the gnome related hidden folders. i remounted my home partition into the original place and it now works like a charm.

If you all are willing to reset your gnome settings, the easy way to get rid of crap is to remove the .gnome and .gnome2 directories. I've had a problem or two running CVS builds of gnome where I had to do that.

@Matir: thank you very much, I had the same problem as described above, gnome couldn't launch metacity because of a file in ~/.metacity/ which didn't exist

I had tried a lot of things, like completely reinstalling metacity and gnome, with no avail.

After googling a lot, I came on this thread and your post helped me out! Thank you a LOT!
