Is this normal? Is Gnome Usaly un-stable?

Try using gnome-system-monitor to monitor the CPU usage, or use "top" on the commandline.

Assuming the keyboard is functional:
Also, you can do "ps -A" in a terminal to see all process that are running, then you can kill a process if its giving problems.
Instead of rebooting the system, try restarting the X server (Ctrl+Alt+Backspace)

If you are looking for a lightweight fast window-manager, then I'd recommend XFCE, but you might take some time getting used to it.

maybe your computer is really and you are running something like fedora, suse, mandrake.

Gnome isnt as stable as it once was try use dolpin gnome or even better fluxbox :D.

Prometheuz 06-29-2005 08:06 AM

im currently using ubuntu linux , but im planning to switch to KDE becasue i have no clue how to do the things you stated above 'dolpin gnome or even better fluxbox'

Im getting used to gnome but one thing is drawing me back from keeping it the random crashes which i cant controlle and when it freezes my mouse and keyboard doesnt work and the screenjust stays the same.

samael26 06-29-2005 08:38 AM

What distro do you use ? Gnome is very stable for me. It's quite odd that it crashes as you said.
Fluxbox is nice also, but you'll have to get used to having no icons and just a plain desktop. Icons
are available with some tweaking.. Try icewm, it's quite good.

Prometheuz 06-29-2005 09:02 AM

The distro im using is : ubuntu

What is icewm , and what does it do. Also i have another problem yesterday i updated ubuntu and for some reason , I cant see the recylaning bin ( trash bin) on the bottom left of the bar its not there , what can i do to fix this or where can i see the files and delete them?

Prometheuz 06-29-2005 12:07 PM

For example i just now went to cahnge my screensaver and once again everything froze.

akudewan 06-29-2005 11:35 PM

The trash is stored in your home directory as .Trash/ directory. Your problem is very odd. Gnome is quite stable for me. Try using another window manager. If the problem goes away, then try reinstalling gnome. If the problem stays, then it might go deeper than the window-manager.

You also mentioned that the system froze when you were changing a screensaver. Was it an OpenGL screensaver?
