Gnome annoyances...

How can I disable Metacity's window animation (on minimize and stuff) ? I can't believe I got away from this in Windows to find it here!! Is it somewhere in GConf?

And the languages on the GDM screen ? I only have 3 languages on my system and the Language item on login mentions EVERY language there is. Where can I trim this down?

Thanks!

For one, oh wise one, you can change to a different window manager. Secondly, you can stop using GDM and change your runlevel to 3 from 5 (for you geniuses out there, that's in /etc/inittab) and run your box like a real man.

What's wrong with you?

Hey, what's your beef? I asked a question, no need to bombard me with your huge maleness... How insecure, your penis must really be small. I want to forgive you, since your high-school years must have been hard, but IT'S NOT MY FAULT!

and you can stop being a prat please.

sardaukar_siet, please do not give prats what they want, best just to ignore them, safe in the knowledge they are dumb. :)

You can't switch off the metacity minimize animation without hacking the source. We shout at Havoc about this, but he takes the stance that it'd be better to make it not-sucky than add a new pref to switch it off.

You can, as mentioned, use a different WM.

For GDM, check the locale.alias file in the gdm config directory. Though, quite why you care about that is beyond me

Why I care...

Customization is essential for me. If I showed you my (former) Windows desktop, you would see that I have EVERYTHING fine-tuned, even the puny stuff. I care about every inch of my computing experience.

Besides, there's the practical side. Switching from Japanese to English to Portuguese is a lot easier with 3 items on the list. :p

Thanks for the tips.

Ahh, I see. Well, fair enough. Of course, just because an option isn't in the GUI, doesn't mean it's not customisable. You can still alter a lot of stuff:

a) In GConf
b) In the source code itself
