Gnome and butchered desktop display

Hello. Today I turned on my computer RedHat 9.0 and logged in as usual except what came up was not normal. My default desktop is Gnome. Today when I logged on it went to the KDE desktop. I thought it was strange because I never use KDE. So, I logged out and started up Gnome.
The problem is the tool bar is on the top and it is really small. When I open up a file browser all I see is icon of paper. On the desktop there are rectangle boxes with stop signs and OK buttons.
This is very strange and I don't know what happened.
Can Gnome just wack out like this?
Has anyone experienced this before?
