recently i found out that linux 7.3 is not compatible with my S3 trio video card so i dug out my old red hat 5.0 i have it installed and the window manager is working but i don't know how to change to the Gnome widow manager. I have checked if it is installed and it is. isn't there a switchdesk command or something for 5.0?

I would try searching this forum for a topic I posted about a week ago about switching between desktop environments. I would try checking out the One Page Linux Manual to see if they have a command there, if you don't have a link to it I'm sorry but I can't get it now. I'm in school taking a final (just finished):p

Linux doesn't have a version 7.3 or a version 5.0... The Linux kernal is on version 2.4.XX and the kernal varies depending on your distribution.

What distribution are you running? I would guess Redhat but that isn't guaranteed.
