glxinfo/glxgears can't open display

Just finished installing and configuring xorg and nvidia drivers. Everything seems to be working fine (startx loads tvm and nvidia logo shows up beforehand). But running glxgears or glxinfo gives me the following error message:

Error: unable to open display (null)

Is this going to cause any problems in the future or can I safely ignore it? the reason I am asking is that the install guide says that the output should be 'direct rendering: Yes'.

Thanks,
jrtayloriv

I am having a similar problem. What does this mean:
"you must run them as user, not as root....."
