Giving permission to /backup partition

Simple question that I do not know:

I got a new hard drive and created a new partition called /backup.

How do I give persmission to write files onto it? I can only write files onto it when I am in root mode (SuperUser).

'chmod a+w /backup' will let everybody write to the drive. This works only on Linux filesystems.

On a different note, you may want to consider adding this new drive to your fstab depending on whether you wanted it to be available automatically or available only after you explicitly mount it. -- J.W.
