how can i view gif files in ubunut.

Install ImageMagick. Use 'display filename.gif'. Works for virtually any graphic file format.

Many (most) browsers will open .gifs (including animated .gifs)

Typical Linux distros have some kind of image viewer---for starters, just try double-clicking on the file.

image viewers

I don't think that image viewers are system or distro specific. It depends on what you have installed and what you intend to do with the image.

Just a list of possible options: Gimp, FireFox, Seamonkey, Kuickshow, Gthumb, Kolourpaint, Kview, KIconEdit, f-spot, Eye of Gnome, GQView, GPhotoAlbum, DigiKam, Xnview, Xzgv, Zgv, KColorEdit, KGhostView, KDVI and quite a lot more.
