Here's the specs for Dell Latitude, it is indeed the same chipset

If you don't have a /usr/src/linux directory you probably don't have the Kernel source installed, in Redhat this is available on the install CD's not sure about Mandrake 9

All I can suggest you do is get your hands dirty, I'm also very new to Linux but am learning all the time
