getting the graphical login back

at some point i lost the capability to login graphically. i would like to get it back, just for the easier shutdown/reboot mechanism through X (being able to shutdown/reboot as non-root user).

as it is right now, i login, startx. logout of X, su -> root, and then reboot/halt.

i think this may have happened around the same time that i was disabling firewall services, but it happens with them enabled as well.

Thanks in advance!!

yep, that was exactly the problem. changing the line
id:3:initdefault:
to
id:5:initdefault:
did the trick.

not sure how that got changed, but thanks a lot!
