Getting started with Comcast?

Good morning/evening to everyone on the forum (whatever it may be for you.) Since this is my "first question" I'll be brief.

I'm trying to get up a SuSe10.1 linux system with a Comcast cablemodem. For starters I'll plug in directly with USB. Thereafter, I'm going to try wireless.

I have the modem connected, the filter in place, the USB connected...and DHCP has dynamically assigned me an IP Address! Problem...I seem to be in never-never land! I do a broadcast ping to my dynamically assigned address 255.255 and there's nobody out there! Also, I have no idea how to set up email or web stuff.

I don't own a windows machine. I don't own a MAC. Is it POSSIBLE to set this up with this configuration? I've gotten this far....what do I do next?

Thanks!

MrMichael

255.255 is definitely NOT your assigned IP address. Try running ifconfig from the command line as root and see what it tells you.

Not sure what you are plugging into your USB port, but to connect to the cable modem, you need an Ethernet cable - looks like an oversized telephone-type connector on the end.
