getting started.

I just got my ubuntu up and running and I just have a few basic questions.
first why does it seem that every app you download and untar is in a read only format? chmoding or man file permission change gets old.

second after i untar the app and change the permissions, i still have issues installing. I had no issue installing flash, but now i am trying to install banshee because from what I have read it should allow me to play the .mp3 files off of my file server. (if there is a better program for doing this please let me know, I found there was and early winamp made for linux but it had appeared to of fallen on its face.)

Is there a default process I should go through after downingload and app to make the install process easier? is there such and thing in linux?

sorry for the miss spelling, but open office keeps crashing every time i start spell checker....

Hi donavin410,

I have a file server at home but I use Gnump3d to share my mp3 in the network. This way, no matter what OS my visitors have they will always be able to browse my music collection.

I am sure that there are other ways to do it. But this is the way I like the most. Hope this helps.

Instead of manually downloading and installing, I use the add/remove feature of ubuntu. Start the Add/Remove app by clicking Applications > Add/Remove... Then click Preferences and on the Ubuntu Software tab ensure that the following are checked:
  • Community-maintained Open Source software
  • Software restricted by copyright or legal issues
  • Source code
Click Close. Now it will ask you to reload, click Reload. Now search for banshee and Ubuntu restricted extras. Install them and everything should work for you.

Both banshee & flash are in the Debian repositories, had you just overlooked the Add/Remove app, or do you still need help?
