getting rid of popups? and figuring out sound
 

I have Suse 9.1 and when I boot the computer, I get 2 or 3 popups. How do I get rid of them? I couldn't find linux popup blockers.

I know this is a broad question, but I can't get sound, either onboard or with the soundblaster card I added.

Also, a side note here, I find it ironic that the suse linux spellchecker says suse is not a word.

You really need to read that link in my sig. What pop ups are
you referring to? What program issues them? Let me assume
that it's KDE, so you would just uncheck the box that has a
check mark that says something like "Show Tips at Startup"

For sound, let's start with "How are you trying to get sound?"
And open a terminal, issue as root "lsmod" and "lspci" and
post the output of those commands.

The spellchecker is most likely not provided by SuSE Linux,
and you should try the LQ spell checker. It doesn't have SuSE,
Slackware, Windoze, or LQ - which I find quite odd, also.

About the popups, if they're internet-related, you can go into your default browser (konqueror, mozilla, etc.), and if you fish around enough in its options, you'll find some pretty cool ad/pop-up blocking features.

As far as how I am trying to get sound, I hooked my speakers up to my laptop which was playing music, and it worked fine. I downloaded a sound file to the Linux computer and it was a no-go for sound in any of the plugins.

The command "lspci" must be run as root user. If it doesn't work
by itself then it's not in your path, and you'll need to issue it as
"/sbin/lspci" to get the output.

So you have sound. What app were you using to play the music?
Was it a CD in the drive?

When you d/led the sound file, what type of file (extension) was it,
and what app(s) did you use to try and play it?

Have you tried to play it with xmms?

Within what app was it a "no-go for sound in any of the plugins"?

I've never run SuSE, but should be leading you to provide the
right information if I can't help, so that others can.

And, please, do yourself a favor. I know it's long, and the article
may "rub you the wrong way" at first, but read Eric S. Raymond's
article about asking questions that is linked in my sig. If you do,
you'll learn how to provide really good information so that some
person who's a real *nix guru will read your thread and help. ;-)

And btw, what's the "pop up" status?
