Getting rid of Linux Partition

Hi. I finally built my new computer and i want to load linux onto that comp and get if off this 1. On this computer i have it 45gig win xp and 15 gig linux.... I used partition magic to create my partition.... How would i go about deleting the partition... and what would happen... Im just worried that once i get rid of the linux partition when my computer goes to boot up its still going to look for Linux Boot up... not be able to find it and then id be really screwed up. If any 1 with experience could respond to this or IM me on AIM my sn is DaXtreme690 and I am usually on 24/7... thanks

The easiest way would be to use the Ranish Partition Manager to change the Linux partitions to what you want Windows to have.

Know how to use the Windows XP Recovery Console to reset your mbr.

How to Remove Linux and Install Windows XP

... ok but im a little confused... im on Partition Magic... nad it allows you to delete a partition... i just wannam ake sure that when i delete it... its not gonna screw up my windows part.. and that once its gone windows will boot up fine etc... and no more boot manager

You will need to use the Windows XP Recovery Console to fix the mbr to the way Windows wants it if you were using grub or lilo to multiboot.

heh.. im totally lost reading that

Perhaps one of these threads will explain it better than the easy microsoft instructions.

Ok i read a bunch ofthose posts and ummm people who want to do same thing have proglems w/ the loading up of windows... 1 problem is that I dont have the cd on me of win xp... so how would i go about this?

Nefarious 02-23-2003 11:51 AM

oh yea... Also all those posts people had trouble getting rid of a GRUB boot loader... im using LILO boot loader.

fancypiper 02-23-2003 11:53 AM

Same situation, different bootloader. You have a bootloader installed in the mbr. Windows is used to being top dog and insists on things being done their way unless tricked by a bootloader that is aware of all filesystems such as grub or lilo.

If you want Windows only, ya gotta wipe it and fix the master boot record to the way Windows wants it to be.

You could edit /etc/lilo.conf and remove the stanza about Linux, then run /sbin/lilo and keep lilo if you had rather.

Nefarious 02-23-2003 11:57 AM

ok... and i understand about how to remove the partition and then i have to put in my winxp cd and run the repair and do the fixmbr but i dont have my winxp cd handy

fancypiper 02-23-2003 12:00 PM

How can you run Windows and not have to keep putting the CD in to change some minor little thing?

Win98 is always asking for it. Doesn't XP as well? Win 2000 seems to want it too.

Nefarious 02-23-2003 12:01 PM

nope... winxp never asks for your disk..... ive had it for over a year and hasnet asked me for a disk once

Nefarious 02-23-2003 12:02 PM

btw... windows when i isnatlled XP it was not a clean install i installedit over windows me.....

fancypiper 02-23-2003 12:06 PM

Well, if it's fat32 filesystem rather than NTFS, get someone to make you a Windows 98 boot floppy disk (I think you can probably download one, search google) and at the prompt type

fdisk /mbr

Take the floppy out and reboot.

What distro (you still runnin RH?)? You can remove lilo from the mbr with:
/sbin/lilo -u

This should remove lilo, and restore the win boot loader. No problems. Then using PM again, delete the linux partition, resize your win partition (or create a second win partition) and have fun :)

Cool

As Johnny Carson used to say, "I did not know that!"

Getting rid of Linux Partition

I just had to remove a minor disaster called Suse 10.1 from a dual boot box (with WinME) and PMagic did all the hard work. Don't know anything about WinXP but if you can get a DOS prompt then Fdisk /mbr seems to avoid any booting problems.
I believe that PMagic will merge two partitions but it is advised not to hold your breath while it is doing so.
Decided not to merge in this case since it may be handy to have a spare partition to accommodate some of the Windows baggage.
I think that dual booting is a bit of a mug's game so my next Linux adventure will be on a dedicated box.
