getting online


I help getting on line (I am very new to linux)

I have a cable connection through a LAN and I can not get the setting right can anyone spare the time to help me I would be grateful

I am using a fedora

I'm assuming it work in windows. What isn't set right? Is your IP address similar to the one you get in windows? Does your cable connection use dhcp? Which network interface are you using?

It might help if you post your current network settings. Use /sbin/ifconfig

the connection works in windows no probs (on it now) i'm just new to the way Fedora core works i will get the settings and post them

Try running the program netconfig in the terminal and you can either set up an ip address up manually or through dhcp. I would suggest setting it up through dhcp, then after this run this command /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start and see if you get a result. Tell me what type of router you have and send the network part of the ip address to me. An example of this is like 192.168.1.x. This is used for the network so you can set up an ip address of like 192.168.1.3 if 192.168.1.x is your network.
