getting neon greens, yellows and purples on youtube and videos

I thought I'd asked this before so sorry if this is a repeat but I just wasn't sure. (I tried to find it but it was not on "MYLQ" or my 'list of subscriptions.') So here goes:

On any video I get these wild neon green, purples and reds and the images seem to be very distorted. Besides being very annoying (there are often video images in sidebars of the AT&T email I use) I am unable to learn from video tutorials. I'm using Xubuntu 13.10 on a Dell Optiplex 170L. Anybody got any ideas on how I can fix this problem? Here's a screenshot. Thanks so much.

Maybe it's a problem with hardware acceleration.
Right click on the video, and choose parameters. If hardware acceleration is on, deactivate it and reload the video.

Hey xamaco, Thanks for trying to help. When I right clicked on the video, there was no "parameters" choice, so I clicked on "settings" and that gave me a little window and the "hardware acceleration" box was checked. But when I went to uncheck it, it would not let me, and the whole video froze.

I made sure the Adobe flashplugin installer is installed. (I'm assuming that is what I need. The Ubuntu Software Center showed nothing else when I entered "adobe.") I added "ubuntu-restricted-extras". No change.

Some guy suggested installing Chrome browser but I'd really rather not. But I will if I have to. Any ideas?

It's a desktop. Dell Optiplex 170L

OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, 32 bit Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1 Processor Count: 1 RAM: 2GB Graphics Card: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller, 96 Mb Hard Drives: C: Total - 38091 MB, Free - 18046 MB; Motherboard: Dell Computer Corp., 0U2575

Those are my specs. See screenshot for driver. (Looked to me like i915.) I'm assuming the chip is Intel (R) 82865G. (On the outside of the computer it says: Intel Pentium 4.)

And I have only looked at video in Firefox. I have not downloaded any. And also on the side screens often the stationary ads and such have that same "psychedelic" neon-ish red/green/purple color and often they are flickering. (Incredibly distracting.)

Thanks for you help.

I'm not absolutely sure of the terminology but I wiped out Windows entirely and booted Xubuntu 10.13 in its place. I believe that's called a single boot. It's not a virtual or a "Wubi" boot. It was pretty straightforward. I just followed the Ubuntu One instructions. Thanks.

from this it sounded like a virtual install

Graphics Card: Intel(R) 82865G Graphics Controller
intel is auto supported in the kernel
no driver needed
It is built in to the OS

but you have a laptop "chip" in a desktop

did the system auto make a "xorg.conf" file
/etc/x11/xorg.conf
or something like that
in it should be a section called "device"
and INTEL should be listed as the driver

also have a look in the error log
/var/log/xorg.0.log
look for any (EE) for an error

John, sorry, those specs were from before I converted the computer. I've attached a couple of screen shots that will hopefully let you know what the innards are like now. And please let me know if you still want me to check those things you suggested. I just figured the new info. might change things.

John VV 03-08-2014 03:19 AM

the shots say nothing about the xorg log file
and any errors it might state

without knowing any errors i can only make wild guesses
there is also a ubuntu boot bug with amd and maybe intel drivers
there might be a issue with "hardware acceleration" in firefox if this is ONLY on the web
it might be a driver/ hardware issue if this also happens in vlc or mplayer
there might be anything

Thanks, John, but I think we're getting whipsawed with the back and forth here. Is this advice of yours still valid?

If it is, I don't know how to carry it out. I'm new. I don't what a "system auto" is and was unable to find out Googling it. Therefore I don't know how to run one. I assumed I was supposed to run /var/log/xorg.0.log in the terminal but was uncertain and didn't want to screw things up.

Just let me know what I need to do, but pretty specifically please, and I'll do it. Thanks.

This is a bit later. I found something called Sysinfo. I dowloaded it and here are the screenshots of the various categories. Two more attachments are in the next entry. Thanks.

Here they are. (I know it's not exactly what you wanted but it's better than telling you it's Windows XP. lol) Thanks.
