Question Getting linux up from a previously windows me comp

At the moment i have two comps sitting in my room, the one that is up and running (and i am using at the moment) is running windows xp, but next to it i have a cyrix 166 which previously ran windows me. At the moment i have tried to install linux on the 166 three or four times after completely blowing windows ME away along with all other files on the computer (i did this on purpose by the way). The first time, with knoppix off of a cd, i got it installed along with some help from my slightly more experienced dad. It worked well for a little bit, except that i had a major problem trying to get knoppix to recognize my network card and be able to get onto the family network which was in turn connected to a dsl line. Before this problem was resolved knoppix would start to throw errors when trying to run almost any program. A couple of days later the x windows files were corrupted (or otherwise wiped out) and i was unable to log on with the gui, but rather using the command line interface. i had found a command to start up x windows, but when i tried it knoppix told me that the files for it could not be found. since then i have tried to install red hat 9 and caldera. Red hat would either freeze during installation or would not like the disks i was using even after the disk checker at the start of the installation had said they were okay. running knoppix with the live-cd feature doesnt work too well either because i get an error when i try to open pretty much any program. If there is anythign you would recommend in order to get linux up and running i would greatly appreciate it.. also post any further questions you would like answered about this case and i wil try to answer to the best of my abilities.
